Employee Spotlight: Construction Ken!

Meet Ken!

Meet Ken Christunas! He is a main asset to our team at Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, where he works as our Director of Construction.

Ken oversees all construction work at Habitat build sites, leads the instruction of volunteers, the coordination of all subcontractors, makes sure that all site objectives are accomplished in a timely manner, and much more!

Before Habitat, Ken worked as a custom home builder for 15 years. He believes that home building is the most interesting job he’s ever had, so he is glad to continue building with Habitat. He learned about our non-profit organization while reading an ad for a job position, and decided to apply. Ken has now worked with Habitat Monroe for just over 6 years.

Ken speaks to ADP volunteers

We conducted an interview with Ken, to learn more about his experience with Habitat.

Why did you decide to take this job position?

I decided to take this job because I believed in Habitat’s mission. I wanted to help individuals who may have never had the opportunity to have a place to call home. I wanted to help them reach that level of homeownership and enjoyed the venture of getting them there.

Ken Christunas, Director of Construction

What is your role at Habitat, and what aspect of your role do you like best?

I am officially the Director of Construction. As I’ve mentioned before, I love having the ability to help people get into these homes. I enjoy building relationships with the Habitat team, as well as the volunteers that I see on the build site.

Additionally, I love the energy-efficient aspects of these Habitat homes. Every home has specific insulating factors which makes the utility bills significantly lower than other homes, such as $40 gas and $50 electric bills. This allows the homeowner to focus on paying their mortgage as opposed to utilities. We also meet indoor air quality standards avoiding all VOC’s (volatile organic compounds).

What has been your favorite experience or project thus far?

My favorite experiences are every time we turn a home over to a homeowner and their children. I love seeing the children getting their own rooms, and a place to call home.

Ken Christunas, Director of Construction

Ken believes that working at Habitat has improved his patience and ability to work with a team, as well as maintain his construction and trades knowledge. He likes the fact that Habitat has many departments, such as home construction, homeownership, fundraising, volunteer coordinating, communications, and finance, but all are brought together for a unifying purpose, and we are empowered to be the best we can be.

In the next 5 years, Ken looks forward to seeing multiple units being built, and hopes that Habitat can continue to generate funding to build more homes for people in need.

On his days off, Ken enjoys spending time with his wife of 49 years, as well as landscaping, yardwork, gardening, and watching his 22 grandkids play sports. He makes his family a priority, and is sure to relax during his time off from construction.

We are incredibly thankful to have Ken on our Habitat Monroe team. Once you have worked with him, it is easy to see how much he cares about Habitat and our homeowner families.

If you see Ken at our office, the Habitat build site, or one of our events, make sure to say hi!
