Meet John Hock!
You may have spotted our Director of Finance, John, and his furry buddy Sullie at our events and around the Habitat Monroe Office.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, John!
Sullie, John’s handsome pup and a frequent Habitat office visitor
I was born and raised in Detroit, MI. I currently live in Ypsilanti Township with my wife and beloved dog, Sullie.
FUN FACT: John is a chocolate and candy connoisseur.
Before Habitat: What did you do before applying to this non-profit organization?
I started out working as a CPA with Pete Carlton and with several other partners in the 80’s. In 1999, I decided to open up my own practice.
In 2001, Debbie (the CEO of Habitat at the time) called me when Habitat needed an audit, which I did for the next 3 years or so.
I maintained correspondence with Habitat, and in 2012, when Habitat needed someone to fill a finance position (I since then had sold my practice) I decided to come and work for Habitat.
What is your role at Habitat?
I am the Director of Finance at Habitat and do all the accounting work.
FUN FACT: John says that he would have been a History Teacher if he didn’t pursue Accounting.
How do you think Habitat will help you in your career development?
I believe that Habitat has helped me to have greater insights into people.
What aspect of your role do you like best?
Although working as an Accountant isn’t stereotypically the most exciting, I really enjoy the work that I do. I make sure the cash flow is managed and the books are in order, so Habitat can continue to work in an orderly manner. I am a people person, so I especially enjoy the conversations that I get to have with my coworkers and community members.
What has been your favorite experience with Habitat?
I always enjoy attending the international conferences that I’ve been to. It is interesting to get together with other finance people.
What are you looking forward to in the next year?
I am looking forward to my trip to Alaska in July. It will be my first time visiting. I also am looking forward to spending time at my cottage and doing some landscaping, which is one of my favorite hobbies.
FUN FACT: Dr. Zhivago is one of John’s favorite movies!
What do you like to do on your days off?
On my days off, I enjoy relaxing at my cottage up North, spending time with Sullie, and going out to see a movie, play, or concert.
We are wonderfully blessed to have John on our Habitat Monroe team. If you see John at our office, or one of our events, make sure to say hi!
