Ethan, the new Americorps representative at Habitat Monroe started his ten-month long term on Monday, Aug. 24, serving in volunteer services!
“It was a welcoming week filled with tons of encouragement, support, and learning,” Ethan said. “A bizarre mix of nervousness and excitement.”
Ethan is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in business management, with a concentration in marketing, which he can expect to learn a lot about as he serves with Habitat Monroe.
“I’m learning a bunch of things in tandem; like how Habitat operates, its mission, as well as how to utilize different software platforms, how recruitment works, and how to promote community engagement,” he said.
An Americorps term offers its representatives the chance to gain valuable professional skills and experience, in addition to the service to their community. As beneficial as an Americorps service team is to the non-profit, it is also meant to be beneficial to the member. Some of the things that Ethan hopes to learn during his term is non-profit business operation, as well as hands-on experience with marketing, media, and networking. He also has a goal to become an effective leader while in his role.
Ethan will certainly learn what it takes to lead as he will be responsible for all volunteer coordination on the build sites. He will also take the lead as an advocate for Habitat & Americorps out in the community. It already seems as though Ethan has fit in naturally with the Habi-Team, but is there anything that surprised him so far?
“How encouraging everyone is inside and outside of work, not only to staff but with our family partners and volunteers,” he said. “I was also surprised at how quickly I caught onto some of my tasks.”
This week, Ethan learned the ins and outs of Habitat for Humanity, visiting build sites, touring Habi-home, and immersing himself in articles & videos. Habitat Monroe is grateful for Ethan choosing to serve with us and we look forward to a fun service term!
