Have you heard of ‘Giving Tuesday’ ?
The concept of Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 and according to givingtuesday.org, it is a “global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.”
The basic idea is to inspire people around the world to do good for someone else, during this holiday season, and every day. Positioned conveniently on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving, it’s a great time to reflect on all the blessings in your life and bless someone else’s.
Over $400 Million was raised online for Giving Tuesday in 2018, with over 150 countries participating around the world.
There’s a way to give back for people at every capability level.
- Give your time - many worthwhile organizations need help just as much as they need funds. Habitat for Humanity, for example, relies on volunteer help to build their houses. Donate your time to an organization that means something to you.
- Give your voice - speaking up about an issue and raising awareness can be just as powerful of a tool as anything else. Use social media to draw your followers attention to an issue that you care about
- Give goods - for places like animal shelters, homeless shelters, or even the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, they’re always looking for donation items
- Give kindness - you can participate in Giving Tuesday even simply with small gestures in your own community. Shovel your neighbor's sidewalk, offer to help an elderly person in your life with grocery shopping, make dinner for a friend who is struggling. Giving doesn’t have to be hard.
Here at Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, we believe in giving a hand-UP to those who need it, by building affordable & energy-efficient housing for families who are in need. We couldn’t do what we do without the giving spirit of our supporters who provide whatever resources they can to help us live out our mission.
